Pod-Theater

Podron: Multilingual Pod-Theater

The project Podron – with the title derived from the words “podcast” and “tadron” (“theater” in Armenian) – brings together artists to perform Armenian playwrights’ plays, some of which are only preserved in archives while others have been staged recently in Istanbul, in Turkish and Armenian. With Podron, which can be considered as a new generation radio theatre, we bring a selection of scripts produced in the Ottoman and the Republic era into the digital medium.

In recent years, various studies published have shown how Armenian theatre artists, who are mostly overlooked in theatre historiography in Turkey, enriched the field of theatre in the Ottoman and Republican periods. As Anadolu Kültür, we aim to contribute to these efforts with the Podron project.

Within the framework of the project, which pays homage to this theatre tradition passed down from generations, we will share information about significant figures and venues in the history of Armenian theatre, along with recordings of plays in Turkish and Armenian, as well as theater terminology with #podrondictionary.

You can access the project content through the Podron Instagram account and Anadolu Kültür’s website and social media accounts.

This project is supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Institut Français (Istanbul). We would like to thank the Hrant Dink Foundation for enabling us to access theater scripts from the Hagop Ayvaz Collection.
