The City and the Child: Discovering Kars

Preparation for the project titled The City and the Child: Discovering Kars began in January 2009, and the project itself continued until June 2010. The project aimed to enable young people and primary school-level children to discover the cultural heritage of the city via creative and participatory methods. Two schools selected by the Provincial National Education Directorate, the Digor Yolu TOKİ Primary School and the Atatürk Primary School were visited, introductory meetings were held with schoolmasters and the project was shared with staff involved with the project. This was followed by an introductory and support meeting with the teachers of the students from years 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Following the first training of trainers session carried out with young volunteers from TOG (Community Volunteers Foundation) city tours began in April 2009. In visits that continued until Museums Week from 18 to 24 May 2009, 600 children were involved. The second part of the programme was carried out from March to June 2010. During the four months that the project was carried out, around 800 primary school students became involved. Within the scope of the project, primary school students that worked with TOG volunteers from universities visited museums as part of a two and a half hour programme and produced work based on Kars Museum.
