TURKEY-ARMENIA YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERTS

69 young musicians from Turkey and Armenia came together for a very special concert in which they performed a repertoire that also includes composers’ works from two countries. Led by the conductors Nvart Andreassian and Cem Mansur, the Turkey-Armenia Youth Symphony Orchestra performed on Friday, July 16 at Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall.

The concert, organised with the cooperation of İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, Anadolu Kültür, and Boğaziçi University included works from Ulvi Cemal Erkin, Aram Haçaturyan and Bedrich Smetana as well as Beethoven and Bizet. The soloists of the concert were Hande Küden and Hrayr Karapetyan. The concert is organised with the support of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture.
Istanbul-born orchestra conductor Nvart Andreassian’s idea for a joint orchestra, which she came up with last summer, is brought to life with the cooperation of Cem Mansur. The auditions for this project, supported by Anadolu Kültür and Boğaziçi University, were led in Armenia by Nvart Andreassian in cooperation with Cadence Music Center and in Turkey by Cem Mansur in conservatories. The conductors listened to hundreds of musicians from conservatories, and chose 65 talented Turkish and Armenian musicians aged between 18 and 23 depending on the individual characteristics and their musical quality to form the Turkey-Armenia Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Turkey-Armenia Youth Symphony Orchestra rehearsed in Istanbul at Boğaziçi University and performed free concerts at Boğaziçi University Garanti Cultural Centre on the 13th and in Büyükada on the 15th for the students and the islanders. Turkey-Armenia Youth Symphony Orchestra is expected to perform in Armenia in the Fall.

Born in Istanbul, Nvart Andressian earned the appreciation of composers and her colleagues from all around the world throughout her career of 40 years as an orchestra conductor. As an expert in French music interpretation, Nvart Andressian acted as the conductor of Contemporary French Music Band “Polychromie” and as the art director of the “Polychromie” Contemporary Art Festival for 20 years in France. Andressian acted as the orchestra and choir conductor in National Lille Conservatory and as Music Director of Armenian State Opera and Tianjin Symphony Orchestra in China. Since 2005 Andressian teaches in Moscow Tchaïkovski State Conservatory.

The founding Musical Director of the Turkish National Youth Symphony Orchestra, Cem Mansur received his music education at City University in London, in Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he received Ricordi Conducting Award, and later in Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, where he studied under Leonard Bernstein. Mansur acted as the conductor of Istanbul State Opera between 1981 and 1989, has performed in concerts with many soloists and orchestras of worldwide fame; acted as the Primary Conductor in Oxford City Orchestra between 1989 and 1997. He was appointed as the Artistic Director of Akbank Chambre Orchestra in 1998. Mansur, who has led the interracial youth orchestra and festival in South Africa in 2007 and 2008, is President of the Ipswich Choral Society, the second oldest such institution in England.
