The Human Rights and Cinema with Civil Society in Diyarbakır project was designed by the Diyarbakır Arts Center as a film screening and round table debate program that would be organized by the partnership of civil society organizations active in Diyarbakır. The program set off with the purpose of consolidating the communication between civil society volunteers and employees and art lovers by linking the human rights agenda in Diyarbakır with similar debates in other parts of the world. The events that were organized in order to bring together people and institutions who worked in the field of civil society, and culture and arts in the city focused on subjects such as children’s rights, youth and education, women and LGBT, human rights and social justice, urbanization and urban transformation. Supported by the Open Society Foundation, the program aimed to contribute to the cultural aspect of civil society work carried out in Diyarbakır.

The opening of the program was made on 16 September 2012 at Sülüklü Han with a screening of the Ralf Christensen documentary Pockets of Resistance which recounts stories of civil resistance from various continents of the world. This was followed by a series of events including Children’s Rights on 20-21 September 2012 organized in collaboration with ÇAÇA (The Children Under The Same Roof Association) and the Migration Foundation, Youth and Education organized in collaboration with Diyarbakır Eğitim-Sen (The Education and Science Workers’ Union Diyarbakır Branch) and Local Agenda 21 City Council Youth Assembly, on 12-13 October 2012 Women and LGBT, and on 7-8 December 2012 Human Rights and Social Justice organized in collaboration with the Sarmaşık Struggle Against Poverty and Sustainable Development Association and TİHV (Human Rights Foundation of Turkey). The closing program on 26 December 2012, organized in collaboration with the Diyarbakır Provincial Coordination Committee of the Union of Turkish Engineers and Architects focused on the theme of Urbanization and Urban Transformation. The film screenings and round table discussions drew interest from the audience, and following the end of the program, texts of the discussions and short videos were published on the web site of DSM.
